The New Equal Earth projection

Equal Earth-projektionen er et verdenskort der viser landenes sande størrelse i forhold til hinanden uden forvridninger i
korrekt størrelse i modsætning til ældre kort (som Mercator-kortet) er landenes arealer her helt præcise.

  • Africa Is Huge – Africa covers about 30.3 million square kilometres, yet on a Mercator map it can look surprisingly similar in size to Greenland. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland.
  • Greenland Shrinks – Greenland appears enormous on the familiar Mercator map because areas near the poles are heavily enlarged. On an equal-area projection, its true size becomes much more obvious.
  • Europe Gets Smaller – Countries and regions far from the Equator are exaggerated by the Mercator projection. On the Equal Earth map, Europe therefore appears considerably smaller relative to Africa.
  • Africa Fits More In – Africa is so large that you could fit the United States, China, India, and most of Europe inside it. Most people dramatically underestimate this because of the way traditional maps display it.
  • Australia Changes Too – Australia also appears larger on the new map compared with how it is often perceived on Mercator maps. The difference comes from the same distortion that affects other regions closer to the Equator.
  • Maps Aren't Neutral – Every flat world map has to distort something because Earth is a sphere. The important question is what you choose to preserve—shape, direction, distance, or area.
  • Mercator Had A Purpose – The Mercator projection wasn't designed simply to make a classroom world map. Created in 1569, it was particularly useful for maritime navigation because it preserved angles and directions well.
  • The Earth Didn't Change – The new map doesn't make Africa or Australia physically bigger. The continents were always that size—the projection simply gives their relative areas a more accurate visual representation.
  • 164 Countries Said Yes – The UN resolution supporting the shift received 164 votes in favor, with six abstentions and only the United States voting against. However, the resolution is non-binding, so it does not instantly replace every map in the world.
  • A Map Changes Minds – Supporters argue that maps influence how people imagine the world, particularly how large or important different regions appear. The new projection is therefore about more than geography—it is also about how we visually understand our planet.
