Reincarnation

Reincarnation is the belief that some aspect of a living being begins a new life after death, often in another body or form. The idea appears in religions and philosophies across the world, but different traditions have very different ideas about what actually gets reborn and why.

  • Many Lives, One Soul – In many reincarnation traditions, an immortal soul leaves one body after death and enters another. The new life may be human or, in some beliefs, even animal.
  • Ancient Indian Roots – Reincarnation, or rebirth, is a central idea in major Indian religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Each tradition gives the cycle its own interpretation.
  • The Endless Cycle – Hindu and Buddhist traditions connect rebirth with samsara, a continuing cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Liberation from this cycle is considered a major spiritual goal.
  • Karma Matters – In traditions that connect reincarnation with karma, actions in one life can influence what happens in a future existence. In Buddhism, for example, rebirth is understood as being influenced by karma rather than by an eternal soul.
  • Pythagoras Believed It – The famous ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras is associated with metempsychosis, the idea that souls are immortal and can move from one body into another after death.
  • He Claimed Memories – Ancient accounts say Pythagoras claimed to remember several of his previous lives. One story even says he recognized a shield from one of his supposed earlier incarnations.
  • Plato Discussed It – Rebirth was not limited to Pythagoras. Ancient Greek thinkers including Socrates and Plato also expressed ideas involving the soul's rebirth or migration.
  • Not Just Humans – Some reincarnation beliefs allow a being to be reborn in different forms, including animals. In Buddhist traditions, for example, rebirth can occur across several different realms of existence.
  • Not All Religions Agree – Most denominations of Christianity and Islam do not teach reincarnation. However, certain religious groups and traditions within or alongside Abrahamic religions have incorporated ideas of reincarnation.
  • Science Hasn't Confirmed It – There is currently no scientific confirmation that reincarnation is physically real. Claims about past-life memories have been studied and debated, but reincarnation remains a religious and philosophical belief rather than an established scientific fact.
