Nuuk capital of Greenland

• The Northernmost Capital – Nuuk lies at about 64° north, making it the northernmost national capital in the world, slightly farther north than Reykjavík.
• A Tiny Capital – Around 20,000 people live in Nuuk, yet that represents more than a third of Greenland’s entire population.
• Nuuk Means Cape – The Greenlandic name Nuuk means “cape”, referring to the city’s position at the end of the enormous Nuuk Fjord.
• Once Called Godthåb – When the city was founded in 1728, it was given the Danish name Godthåb, meaning “Good Hope.” The Greenlandic name Nuuk gradually replaced it after Greenland gained home rule.
• Founded In 1728 – Nuuk was established by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede, who moved his settlement to the site of an existing Inuit settlement called Nûk.
• A City By The Fjord – Nuuk sits beside Nuup Kangerlua, one of Greenland’s major fjords. The surrounding landscape is dominated by mountains, water, and Arctic wilderness.
• Greenland’s Biggest City – Nuuk is by far Greenland’s largest settlement. Its population has roughly doubled since the late 1970s, reflecting increasing urbanisation.
• An Arctic Golf Course – Nuuk is home to what is described as the world’s only Arctic golf course, located near the city and surrounded by Greenland’s dramatic landscape.
• Home Of Government – Nuuk isn't just Greenland's largest city—it is where the Government of Greenland and the institutions of the territory are based. It is also Greenland's major cultural and economic centre.
• Greenland Is Enormous – Nuuk is the capital of the world’s largest island, Greenland, which covers more than 2.16 million km². Yet almost 80% of Greenland is covered by ice, leaving relatively little land suitable for settlement.
