Venus was the Roman goddess of love, beauty, desire, and fertility, and she became one of the most famous goddesses of the ancient world. But behind her glamorous image are some wonderfully strange myths, surprising connections, and symbols.

  • Born From Foam – In one famous myth, Venus emerged from the sea foam after the god Uranus was overthrown. Her name is linked to the idea of beauty and desire.
  • Greek Double – Venus was closely associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. The Romans adopted many of Aphrodite’s stories and transformed her into their own Venus.
  • Mother of Rome – Venus was believed to be the mother of Aeneas, a Trojan hero whose descendants were said to have founded Rome. This made her a divine ancestor of the Roman people.
  • A Golden Apple – Venus won the famous Judgment of Paris by promising Paris the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Troy. The prize? A golden apple—and a promise that helped trigger the Trojan War.
  • Mars Was Her Lover – Venus was famously associated with Mars, the Roman god of war. Their unlikely pairing symbolized the powerful combination of love and conflict.
  • Cupid’s Mother – In Roman mythology, Venus was the mother of Cupid, the mischievous god of desire. So the goddess of love had a son who literally shot people with love.
  • A Powerful Symbol – Venus was often shown with roses, doves, mirrors, and shells. These symbols connected her with beauty, romance, femininity, and desire.
  • Not Always Gentle – Venus could be loving, but she could also be fiercely vengeful. Those who insulted her beauty or refused to respect her could face some very unpleasant consequences.
  • A Planet Named Venus – The brightest planet visible from Earth after the Sun and Moon was named Venus because of its brilliant, beautiful appearance in the night sky.
  • Friday Belongs to Venus – Venus gave her name to Friday in several languages, including French (vendredi) and Italian (venerdì). So even the modern week still carries a little piece of the ancient goddess.
