Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese-American writer, poet, and artist best known for The Prophet, one of the most widely read books of the 20th century. His life was just as fascinating as his writing, spanning Lebanon, Boston, Paris, and New York.

  • A Global Bestseller – The Prophet was first published in 1923 and became a worldwide phenomenon. It has been translated into dozens of languages and has sold millions of copies.
  • Born in Lebanon – Gibran was born in 1883 in Bsharri, a mountain town in what is now Lebanon. The landscapes of his homeland deeply influenced his poetry and artwork.
  • Moved to America – Gibran emigrated to the United States with his mother and siblings when he was a child. He spent part of his youth in Boston before later returning to Lebanon for his education.
  • An Artist Too – Gibran wasn't only a writer; he was also a talented visual artist. His drawings and paintings often featured mystical figures and themes similar to those found in his poetry.
  • Written in English – Although Arabic was his first language, Gibran wrote The Prophet in English. This helped introduce his distinctive blend of Eastern and Western ideas to a huge international audience.
  • A Poet of Wisdom – The Prophet is structured as a series of poetic speeches about subjects such as love, marriage, work, freedom, and death. Its simple, philosophical style made it popular far beyond traditional literary circles.
  • Friends With Artists – Gibran became part of artistic and intellectual circles in New York and Boston. He was connected with writers, artists, and thinkers who helped shape his creative world.
  • A Literary Rebel – Early in his career, Gibran challenged traditional literary conventions and social expectations. His writing often blended spirituality, philosophy, and romantic imagery in unusual ways.
  • The Pen Name – He is widely known in the West as “Khalil Gibran,” but his full Arabic name was Gibran Khalil Gibran. The order of his names was changed when his work was published in English.
  • A Lasting Legacy – Gibran died in New York in 1931 at just 48 years old. Despite his relatively short life, his writings continue to be quoted, translated, illustrated, and read around the world.
