A Remarkable Career Nearly Derailed by a Wastebasket

Stephen King is widely known as the “King of Horror,” but his career encompasses more than frightening readers. With over 60 novels, more than 200 short stories and hundreds of millions of copies sold worldwide, he has become a major figure in popular fiction.

One of his most important breakthroughs almost disappeared into the rubbish. King discarded the first three pages of Carrie, his debut novel. His wife, Tabitha, retrieved them and encouraged him to keep writing. Her intervention helped an abandoned opening become the book that launched his publishing career.

The Writer Behind Richard Bachman

King also explored what would happen when his work reached readers without his famous name attached. He published novels as Richard Bachman, partly to test whether his success depended on the writing itself or his reputation.

The surname had a musical connection: King was listening to the rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive when he needed to choose a name. A persistent bookstore clerk eventually uncovered the author behind the pseudonym.

Ordinary Work and an Unsettling Hotel

Before literary success transformed his finances, King worked as a high school English teacher and also held a job in an industrial laundry. Those early working years contrast sharply with his later status as a bestselling author.

Travel provided another important spark. A single night in an almost empty Colorado hotel helped inspire The Shining. The unsettling experience became the starting point for one of his best-known horror novels.

Beyond Horror: Fantasy, Music and Film

King’s creative interests extend across genres and media:

  • The Dark Tower is a multi-volume series combining fantasy, science fiction and western elements. Its development stretched across decades.
  • The Rock Bottom Remainders gave King a musical outlet. He played rhythm guitar and sang in the charity rock band alongside fellow authors, including Amy Tan and Dave Barry.
  • Screen adaptations have offered opportunities for cameo appearances. His small roles have included a cemetery caretaker and a pharmacist.

A Family of Authors

Writing is not a solitary profession in the King household. Tabitha King is a published author herself, as are the couple’s sons Joe Hill and Owen King.

From Tabitha’s early encouragement to his sons’ own literary careers, family forms an important part of King’s story. Behind the famous horror brand lies a career shaped by persistence, experimentation and creative collaboration.
